On Saturday, September 27, the programs of the Conservation Corps of Greater New Orleans (CCGNO) hosted service projects to coincide with three important national events: the Green Jobs Now Day of Action to Build the New Economy, Service Nation’s National Day of Action, and National Public Lands Day.   Honoring the 75th Anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps, these service projects helped draw attention to both the importance of community service and the significant amount of work that corpsmembers are doing to rebuild Greater New Orleans.  In conjunction with these service projects, an afternoon rally, sponsored by Green For All and Service Nation, promoted the development of thousands of local, green jobs for which our Corpsmembers are currently training.  CCGNO was proud to have youth leading the day – and leading the effort to bring green jobs to Louisiana.  One corpsmember at the rally, Devin Chaney from CCGNO’s LA Green Corps, was quoted in the Times Picayune:

"I realized that this is going to be the future. Houses are going to be built energy-efficient, and lots of regular contractors don't know how to build the new way. So I said, why not just get a head start?"

During the day of action, CCGNO’s LA Green Corps took the lead in service projects in Orleans parish.  One of the LA Green Corps crews housed at the Mid City Neighborhood Organization’s Old City Building Center worked diligently to clean up leaves and debris, plant flowers, and remove and salvage a set of wooden posts in Lafayette Square in downtown New Orleans. Additionally, the Alliance for Affordable Energy hosted Corpsmember-led tours of its new energy efficiency resource center.

In St. Bernard Parish, CCGNO’s City of Hope Youth Development Corps continued its ongoing project to convert a flood-damaged former high school into a community center.  Corpsmembers in this ongoing project have repeatedly recruited volunteers to work alongside them.  For both this event and the recent Workforce Innovations Conference (in which they hosted 50 volunteers), youth train volunteers on basic safety procedures before working alongside in the rebuilding effort.   The pictures and stories from each site are playing a vital role in helping show that Louisiana is ready for green jobs.

We are proud to see your young corpsmembers leading community service projects here.  As was demonstrated by the service projects and the event, New Orleans is READY for the GREEN ECONOMY.
